In an unprecedented move in Spain, hundreds of companies are making an extraordinary effort to produce essential materials for healthcare providers in the fight against the coronavirus; some companies already manufacture these products, but for many, it is a new initiative.
To guarantee that the manufacturing process is carried out with the quality, safety and speed required, and to ensure the prompt availability of the material, the Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, is offering, free of charge, various technical standards. These documents describe the essential processes for manufacturing surgical masks, gowns and sheets, as well as gloves or other protective clothing.
Please find below the official statement by UNE regarding this initiative:
The purpose of the Spanish Association of Standardization, UNE, is to contribute to the competitiveness and safety of companies, their products and services and processes, the protection of people, of consumers and of the environment, the integration of people with disabilities, the promotion of social responsibility and the improvement of business risk control. This way, it contributes to achieving business excellence and ensuring the well-being of society.
During these exceptional circumstances for society and companies, the mission of UNE takes on greater meaning.
UNE is aware of the urgent need for the manufacture of personal protective equipment and priority medical supplies for many companies in the health sector. Thus, in accordance with specific UNE technical standards, within the extraordinary and exceptional framework regulated by the Royal Decree 463/2020, of 14 March, declaring the state of alarm regarding the management of the health crisis caused by COVID-19, UNE has taken the initiative to offer, free of charge, a set of standards of special emergency medical importance in the current circumstances.
