The members of the VID-EXPERT operational group met on 19 February at the headquarters of the Spanish Wine Federation (FEV) to review and discuss the results obtained after almost three years of delivery.
The VID-EXPERT tool has been designed with the aim of calculating the carbon footprint of vineyards and wineries while also providing end-to-end diagnostics and customised recommendations to mitigate the industry's environmental impact. The wrap-up meeting underscored this tool's importance as a critical resource for fostering sustainability and environmental responsibility in the wine industry and supporting the sector's green and digital transition.
An online workshop for users of the VID-EXPERT smart tool was also held two days earlier, attended by more than 40 wine sector stakeholders. At this workshop, the tool's various interfaces were navigated together with the users and specific case studies were presented to guide their use of the tool.
This innovative VID-EXPERT tool not only allows wineries to calculate their overall carbon footprint but also makes it easier to break this footprint down across all the different vineyard practices. Wineries can identify areas where it is most necessary and effective to cut their carbon footprint. This personalised and precise approach will unlock efficient management of emissions reduction with no need to call on external resources.
The VID-EXPERT Operational Group is made up of: Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, as the coordinator; Spanish Wine Federation (FEV) ; Intergia Energía Sostenible (INTERGIA); Sistemas Avanzados de Tecnología, S.A. (SATEC); Polytechnic University of Madrid (CEIGRAM-UPM); Institute of Agri-Food Research and Technology (IRTA) and the University of Zaragoza (UNIZAR) .
VID-EXPERT has been a project funded by the EU through a grant for innovation projects of general interest for operational groups of the European Innovation Partnership on agricultural productivity and sustainability (EIPI-Agri), under the National Programme for Rural Development 2014-2020 (PNDR) of the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
