The Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, the national representative of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), has published the Spanish version of the first global standard on artificial intelligence (AI) management systems.
The Standard is available on its website as UNE-ISO/IEC 42001:2025 Information technology. Artificial intelligence. Management System. Its main objective is to provide a systematic and coherent approach to the management of artificial intelligence, covering key aspects such as fairness, accountability, transparency, cybersecurity and privacy, safety and health, financial implications, accessibility and human rights.
In the words of Javier García, Director General of UNE and Vice-President of ISO: “Artificial intelligence is transforming the world at an unprecedented speed, making it essential to establish robust, reliable and measurable frameworks based on values such as transparency, ethics and security. With the publication of the Spanish version of the global AI standard, UNE, as a global organization, effectively addresses the digital transformation challenges of Spanish organizations, thus contributing to the shared progress of society".
The standard specifies the requirements for establishing, implementing and continuously improving an artificial intelligence management system in organizations, in accordance with the principles of governance, transparency, ethics and security. It is also applicable to any organization, regardless of size, type and nature, that provides or uses products or services that rely on AI systems.
The development of the international standard involved experts from the UNE Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Big Data (CTN-UNE 71/SC 42), where 136 experts from 58 entities across all sectors are represented.
