UNE publishes the global standard on AI for companies in Spanish

  • ​​The Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, has published the Spanish version of the first global ISO/IEC standard on artificial intelligence (AI) management systems. The UNE-ISO/IEC 42001 Standard is available on the website of the Spanish standardization body.

  • The standard specifies the requirements for establishing, implementing and continuously improving an artificial intelligence management system in organizations, in accordance with the principles of governance, transparency, ethics and security.

  • It is aimed at all organizations, regardless of their size, type and nature, that provide or use products or services that rely on AI systems.

Madrid, 24 April 2025 – The Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, the national representative of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), has published the Spanish version of the first global standard on artificial intelligence (AI) management systems, aimed at all types of organizations.

This standard specifies the requirements and provides guidance for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continuously improving an AI management system within an organization, offering a comprehensive framework to ensure that AI systems are designed and operated in accordance with the principles of governance, transparency, ethics and security.

The Standard is available on the website of the Spanish standards body as UNE-ISO/IEC 42001:2025 Information technology. Artificial intelligence. Management System. Its main objective is to provide a systematic and coherent approach to the management of artificial intelligence, covering key aspects such as fairness, accountability, transparency, cybersecurity and privacy, safety and health, financial implications, accessibility and human rights.

With the publication of the Spanish version of the global AI standard, UNE, as a global organization, effectively addresses the digital transformation challenges of Spanish organizations, thus contributing to the shared progress of society".

The UNE ISO/IEC 42001 Standard is applicable to any organization, regardless of size, type and nature, that provides or uses products or services that rely on AI systems.

Implementing an AI management system in accordance with this standard offers numerous benefits, including: it allows for the identification and mitigation of associated risks; it enhances the trust of clients, employees and other stakeholders; it facilitates regulatory compliance and improves decision-making. The standard is certifiable by an independent third party, which is a way to ensure that it is applied effectively.

The development of the international standard involved experts from the UNE Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Big Data (CTN-UNE 71/SC 42), where 136 experts from 58 entities across all sectors are represented.​​
