UNE leads the Spanish translation of the global ESG standard

03/03/2025

The Spanish Association for Standardisation, UNE, the national representative of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), has published the official Spanish version of the global standard that will help companies promote ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles, after leading its translation.

It is incorporated into the national catalogue of standards as UNE-ISO IWA 48 Framework for the implementation of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles). The document, available for free access as part of the sponsorship agreed upon by ISO, is available on the website of the Spanish standardisation body.

Javier García, Director General of UNE and Vice-President of ISO, commented: "UNE, as a global organisation, has played a prominent role in the development and translation of this global standard into Spanish, aligning with our mission to contribute to societal progress and the creation of a safer, more competitive, and sustainable world."

It will enable its uniform application in a market of over 600 million Spanish speakers. The organisations in Spain and Latin America have a tool that will help them integrate ESG criteria into their corporate culture, facilitating the adoption of sustainable practices and contributing to a more responsible business ecosystem around the world.

The UNE-ISO IWA 48 standard is aimed at both organisations that are just beginning to engage with this framework, including small and medium-sized enterprises, and more advanced ones seeking to optimise actions, strategies, and results in sustainability. It will help them determine which aspects to consider and how to address them to implement an ESG framework, providing examples of concrete actions and a list of ISO standards that assist in each case. It also provides a set of principles to ensure that sustainability reporting has an impact both externally and internally.
