Madrid, 3 March 2025 – The Spanish Association for Standardisation, UNE, the national representative of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), has published the official Spanish version of the global standard that will help companies promote ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles, after leading its translation within ISO. This standard was published in English in November 2024 and is now available in Spanish thanks to the work of UNE.

The new regulatory document is incorporated into the national catalogue of standards such as UNE-ISO IWA 48 Framework for the implementation of environmental, social and governance principles (ESG). The document, which is free to access in an exceptional way and within the framework of sponsorship agreed by ISO to support efforts global sustainability, is available on the Spanish standardisation organisation website.

Chief Executive Officer of UNE and vice-president of ISO Javier García highlighted that: "UNE, as a global organisation, has played a prominent role in the development and translation of this global standard into Spanish, aligning with our mission to contribute to societal progress and the creation of a safer, more competitive, and sustainable world." “The application of ESG principles represents a strategic commitment for organisations, by integrating environmental sustainability, social responsibility and ethical governance in their operations," he added.

Having the Spanish version of the global ESG standard will enable it to promote its homogeneous application in all Spanish-speaking countries, a community of more than 600 million people. The organisations in Spain and Latin America have a tool that will help them integrate ESG criteria into their corporate culture, facilitating the adoption of sustainable practices and contributing to a more responsible business ecosystem around the world.

The UNE-ISO IWA 48 standard is aimed at both organisations that are just beginning to engage with this framework, including small and medium-sized enterprises, and more advanced ones seeking to optimise actions, strategies, and results in sustainability. It will help them determine which aspects to consider and how to address them to implement an ESG framework, providing examples of concrete actions and a list of ISO standards that assist in each case.

With regard to sustainability reporting frameworks, it provides a series of principles to make it an external impact report: to investors, customers and stakeholders, and internally: promoting an analysis of the organisation, its risks and opportunities or its stakeholders.
