Madrid, 5 June 2024 - The Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, has published the UNE-ISO 53800 standard, the first global standard to promote gender equality and female empowerment in all types of organizations all around the world. It is a guide that will help both organizations that are dealing with gender equality for the first time, and those with more experience in this area.
The UNE-ISO 53800 Standard Guidelines for the promotion and implementation of gender equality and women's empowerment is the Spanish version of the ISO 53800 standard published on 15 May in English and French, the first global standard on this topic. UNE, as the national member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), played an active role in developing this standard and spearheaded the translation process to make it easier to understand and use for the nearly 500 million Spanish speakers around the world.
Over 100 experts from 62 countries all over the world were involved in writing it, which demonstrates the high interest on a global level and ensures its adaptability to different cultural and social contexts. Spain actively participated through the mirror CTN-UNE 194 Standardization Technical Committee, led by Val Díez, CEO of STANPA and president of the CEOE's Equality and Diversity Commission.
This new standard proposes a model to achieve equality between women and men in any organization, based on its situation and with a commitment to continuous improvement, regardless of its activity, nature or size. It includes guidelines, tools, best practices and other resources that will help organizations assess their current situation, identify barriers and opportunities, and develop specific actions to address the issue of gender, taking into account their stakeholders and their main business or activity. The goal is for each organization to commit to real gender equality and to set goals based on its situation and context, and to look for equally committed partners and collaborators, creating a network of real and effective equality.
The UNE-ISO 53800 Standard structures the organization in four key areas: internal dimension, activity and investments, external relations, and internal and external communications; for each area, it lays out a series of topics to work on, and for each topic it suggests specific actions and expectations on the behaviour of that organization. By working on the guidelines proposed in the four areas, the organization will achieve objectives and consolidate an internal culture of equality that will allow it to declare that it is contributing to achieving United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5.
