UNE celebrates the ISO-GHGP alliance to unify global emissions measurement standards

13/10/2025

The Spanish Association for Standardization (UNE) celebrates the alliance between the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP), a key step toward global decarbonization and climate action.

At a decisive moment for accelerating action against climate change, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP) —an initiative led by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)— have announced a strategic alliance to align their methodologies for quantifying greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Both the GHGP methodologies and the ISO 1406X family of standards (ISO 14064-1, ISO 14067, and ISO 14064-2) are currently the main tools used by public and private organizations worldwide to calculate their carbon footprint.

The agreement aims to integrate both approaches within a common and coherent framework that harmonizes terminology, measurement, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reporting at the organizational, product, and project levels. In this way, ISO and the GHGP will jointly develop a set of standards under the logo of both organizations, making it easier to ensure consistent understanding and application across all sectors.

A common language to accelerate climate action

This collaboration marks a historic milestone in the field of sustainability, as it will establish a unified and shared language among companies, verifiers, consultants, auditors, public administrations, and financial institutions.

In addition, harmonising both frameworks will help simplify processes and reduce costs for organisations, improve data consistency, and support more informed policy and investment decisions. It will also foster the integration of these methodologies into national and international regulatory frameworks, strengthening trust and transparency in climate impact measurement.

UNE, Spain's representative in ISO

The Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, as Spain’s sole representative in ISO, welcomes this initiative as a key step towards decarbonization and global climate action, in line with the organization’s purpose: to drive shared progress through standards.

UNE actively participates in the development of international standards on climate change mitigation and adaptation through the Standardization Technical Committee CTN-UNE 216/GT2, a group that welcomes the participation of organizations wishing to contribute their knowledge and expertise.

Currently, UNE has the participation of over 12,500 professionals in its technical committees and represents Spain in the main international (ISO and IEC), European (CEN-CENELEC and ETSI), and American (COPANT) standardization bodies. Its Director General, Javier García, is the Vice-President of ISO.
