The Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, joins the celebration of World Standards Day, observed every year on October 14. This special and significant date pays tribute to the tens of thousands of professionals worldwide involved in developing standards that contribute to a better, fairer, and more sustainable world through dialogue and collaboration. In Spain alone, more than 14,000 top experts from Spanish organizations lead the development of standards.
Standards reflect the market consensus on best practices in key areas crucial for organizational competitiveness and growth, as well as for the interests of society as a whole. UNE's purpose, as a global organization, is to ensure these standards contribute to shared progress and assist organizations in overcoming their major challenges.
Under the slogan “A shared vision for a better world”, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) emphasize how standards facilitate the achievement of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined in the 2030 Agenda. The focus this year is on SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, particularly highlighting how artificial intelligence (AI) is driving progress in these key areas with support from global standards and best practices.
International standards form the foundation for global progress and support AI technologies that foster innovation and build the resilient and sustainable infrastructure that is essential for industrial growth. Moreover, these standards have the potential to support regulatory frameworks both nationally and internationally.
Spain is leading two European standardization initiatives in AI, approved this year by the European Joint Committee on Artificial Intelligence Standardization (CEN/CLC JTC 21 Artificial Intelligence), focusing on the ethical use of AI, a topic of significant social concern.
On World Standards Day, UNE reaffirms its commitment to creating a safer, more competitive, and sustainable world.
