18/07/2025

The Spanish Association for Standardisation (UNE), the Spanish Metrology Centre (CEM) and the National Accreditation Body (ENAC), coordinated by the Ministry of Industry and Tourism, held their annual meeting to define new lines of action aimed at strengthening the strategic role of quality infrastructure in economic development, safety and innovation.

The quality infrastructure works as a engine of innovation and competitiveness. At this meeting, the institutions reinforced their collaboration to strengthen the role of the quality infrastructure, achieving greater impact on the economy, the business fabric and product safety. In this regard, the creation of a new current news section on the "Spanish quality infrastructure" website was highlighted.

Among the meeting’s priorities were supporting the deployment of the Spanish Artificial Intelligence Strategy, developing materials to facilitate regulatory compliance and promote innovation, and reviewing the "Guide for the use of standards and accreditation in public procurement", along with creating training modules for public administrations working in this area.

The meeting also featured the presentation of the report "The Economic Impact of Standardization in Spain", prepared by the Centre for Industrial Strategy and Foresight (CEPI), which concluded that standardization has contributed 14.7% to the average annual growth of Spain's GDP over the past 40 years, representing more than €140 billion. This figure places Spain among the most advanced countries in terms of standardisation.

Attending the meeting were Javier García, Director General of UNE and Vice-President of ISO; José Manuel Prieto, Deputy Director of Security and Industrial Quality of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism; José Ángel Robles, Director of CEM; Beatriz Rivera, Director General of ENAC; Paloma García, Director of Standardization Programmes and Stakeholder Engagement at UNE; and Mónica Sanzo, Director of International Cooperation and Relations at UNE.
