Smart Tourism Destinations have 5 new UNE standards to help improve their management

28/09/2022

The Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, is working actively to develop standards in the fields of smart cities and smart tourism destinations, aligned with the main objectives of the State Secretariat for Tourism and led by SEGITTUR (Sociedad Mercantil Estatal para la Gestión de la Innovación y las Tecnologías Turísticas) through the UNE Smart Cities Committee.

As a result of this initiative involving over 700 experts in the field, 34 UNE standards have been published, of which 8 are specifically aimed at the tourism ecosystem. These standards, developed in the Subcommittee on Smart Tourism Destinations, will contribute to strengthening Spain's leadership in world tourism.

Unlike the previously published STD standards for management systems, indicators and semantics of horizontal application, these latest 5 standards focus on improving specific aspects.

  • Standard UNE 178504 specifies the requirements and recommendations for high-tech hotels connected to smart tourism destination or smart city platforms. It revises some aspects of the previous version to facilitate its application by accommodation companies.
  • Standards UNE 178505, which specify the requirements for a framework for the creation of tourism destination websites, and UNE 178506, which defines a methodology for search engine optimization (SEO) of websites for tourism destinations, provide guidelines for enhancing tourist experience, reliability, quality and positioning of the website, as well as improvement in the interaction between people, companies, services and destinations.
  • Standard UNE 178507 on Applications of Wi-Fi connection on beaches facilitates the collection of data to improve decision-making by the Tourist Destination Management Body.
  • Finally, Standard UNE 178508 on the Tourism Destination applications model for mobile devices specifies the general characteristics for development, design and content, as well as for data management, to ensure its integration into the data of the smart tourism ecosystem.

To give continuity to the standardization work, Enrique Martínez Marín, Chairman of SEGITTUR and Javier García Díaz, Director General of UNE, signed a new collaboration agreement in September aimed at promoting the development of technical standards in support of the digital and sustainable transformation of tourism destinations and ensuring the leading position of the Spanish international tourism market.

Among the activities scheduled in 2022 and 2023 are the development of 3 new UNE draft standards in the field of STD, the internationalization of a published UNE Standard, the testing of the UNE Standard on Apps and the preparation of a report that highlights best practices and benefits of jointly implementing the SEGITTUR Smart Tourism Destination methodology and the requirements of the Standard UNE 178501, Management System for Smart Tourism Destinations.
