Spain leads ISO standards for essential oils

09/06/2025

The Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, organised the meeting of the international standards committee on Essential Oils (ISO/TC 54 Essential oils), which met virtually from 4 to 6 June. This committee enjoys significant Spanish leadership, with the presidency being held by STANPA (Spanish Association of Perfumery and Cosmetics), the role of secretary held by UNE, and leading numerous international standards projects from Spain.

At this meeting, which was attended by more than 25 people from 9 national delegations, the committee's activities were highlighted and the work programme was reviewed. There are currently three projects under development led by Spain on nationally produced oils that are very important for the Spanish sector: cistus essential oil, Lavandin Grosso essential oil and Lavandin Abrial essential oil.

Likewise, discussions were held on new regulatory proposals, among which is a new Spanish proposal for revision of the standard on lemon essential oil, in order to include the two varieties produced in Spain: Fino and Verna, the latter being a native Spanish variety, so the revision of the standard is of vital interest to the sector.

Key new features in ISO procedures and tools were also updated.

STANPA represents the cosmetics industry in Spain and has been an international leader in the standardisation of essential oils since 2018. The Association, led by Val Diez, plays a fundamental role in the leadership of Spanish standardisation in its sector, for the benefit of national interests.
