From 18 to 22 September, the International Organization for Standardization, ISO, held its General Assembly in Brisbane, Australia, where experts and leaders from the ISO community, as well as government, industry and civil society representatives, engaged in constructive dialogue about the most pressing challenges facing our planet today, as well as looking ahead to collaborative solutions. The topics discussed included the main trends in standardisation and the role of standards on hydrogen, cybersecurity, metaverse, climate change, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, waste management, resilience, sustainability, ESG and new technologies. The Spanish contribution to international standardisation was also highlighted.
The Vice-President of ISO and Director General of the Spanish Association for Standardization UNE, Javier García, and the Director of Cooperation and International Relations, Mónica Sanzo, attended the in person or online annual meeting, along with more than 9,000 representatives from 120 countries.
The ISO Council and the Technical Management Board (TMB) focused on the key areas to be developed in order to respond to the challenges facing society and organizations. Furthermore, after reviewing the ISO 2030 strategy, the Assembly agreed on including a new priority: Environmental sustainability.
One of the highlights was the presentation of the Lawrence D. Eicher Prize to ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42 "Artificial Intelligence", for its innovative approaches and proactive management and best practice in developing standards for this rapidly evolving technology.
