The Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, has led the development of a new European standard: CWA 18211:2025 "Reference Architecture for the Application of AI Solutions in the Process Industry – The s-X-AIPI Experience," which establishes a comprehensive technical framework for implementing artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in industrial environments. In doing so, UNE contributes to the digital transformation of the European industrial sector.
The document has been developed as part of the Horizon Europe s-X-AIPI project, in which UNE is a standardization partner. Amanda Suo, cybersecurity manager at UNE, served as the secretary of the CEN workshop, while Daniel Gómez from CARTIF chaired this initiative.
The European standard provides implementation guidelines for sectors such as pharmaceuticals, asphalt, steel, and aluminium, and involved the participation of more than 20 experts from various European organizations. The CWA is available free of charge on the website of the European standards organizations CEN and CENELEC, whose Spanish representative is UNE.
This reference architecture facilitates the integration of AI with automated management systems, the implementation of self-X capabilities (self-healing, self-optimization), and feedback mechanisms with human supervision, contributing to the digital transformation of European process industries.
