UNE, the Spanish Association for Standardization, has participated in the Global Standards Symposium (GSS-20), a high-level event organised by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) which brings together world experts every four years to respond to major social challenges.
Under the theme "International standards to enable digital transformation and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)", experts underlined the leading role of the international standards bodies ITU, ISO and IEC in facilitating and harmonising global standardisation efforts for the sustainable digital transformation necessary for the rapid achievement of SDGs.
The event was attended by Javier García, CEO of UNE, who moderated the session "Towards people-oriented cities and communities: Driving innovation and cross-sector digital transformation". This was attended by experts from the European Commission and from various cities and technology parks, among others. The session explored how digital innovation can be harnessed to meet citizens' demands and build resilience in key sectors within smart cities and communities.
Spanish standardisation is an international benchmark, with UNE contributing to the global and European coordination needed to achieve the SDGs. The Spanish standards body is a founding partner of the Spanish Global Compact Network and holds the vice-presidency of the United Nations U4SSC initiative.
