Spain participates in the general assemblies of CEN and CENELEC

23/06/2023

On 21 and 22 June, Belgrade hosted the General Assemblies of the European standardization organizations, CEN and CENELEC. UNE, the Spanish standardization body, through its participation in the Boards of Directors and the General Meetings, was an active participant, contributing in discussions on the measures underway to cite standards in European legislation, the digital transformation and the main areas of activity to implement the CEN CENELEC 2030 Strategy.

As part of the General Assemblies, several technical sessions took place, including one marking the 30th anniversary of the Single European Market. Mauve Rute, Chief Standardization Officer of the European Union, recalled the important role of technical standards in promoting the Internal Market, and pointed out the opportunity we have to define trends in emerging technologies and be facilitators of trade.

A key point of the discussions was the need to rejuvenate the European standardization system through actions in national education systems, as well as to establish efficient communication and collaboration channels to promote mutual trust among all the economic agents involved in European standardization.

During the statutory parts of the assemblies, Stefano Calzolari was re-elected president of CEN, and Riccardo Lama was elected president of CENELEC. Both expressed their commitment to work towards ensuring that European standards provide solutions to market needs, in particular by ensuring streamlined developments with a view to digital development environments and, above all, by supporting the deployment of European public policies.
