Spain participates in the IEC General Meeting 2024, with the focus this year on digitisation

28/10/2024

Edinburgh hosted the General Meeting of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) of 2024. The Spanish delegation was led by Javier García, General Director of UNE and Vice President of ISO, who was accompanied by Mónica Sanzo, Director of Cooperation and International Relations, and Miguel Ángel Aranda, Head of International Relations; and Spanish experts and stakeholders from other organisations.

The delegation attended the various meetings of governing and technical bodies, where more than 1,500 stakeholders from around the world come together to decide on current issues. The Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, is the Spanish member of the IEC.

Artificial intelligence and digitalisation of standards and online development processes were the focus of this year's meeting. As from 2025, IEC standards will be developed through online platforms and will presented in documents in different formats, especially xml. Additionally, progress is being made in creating SMART documents by main users of standards, and which opens up a future of digitised solutions which, with the help of artificial intelligence, we want to shape ISO standards.

Technical progress includes work in areas such as medium voltage, the carbon footprint of electric and electronic (EE) products, services and systems, electronic product labelling, drones, cybersecurity and critical infrastructures and zero-emission buildings. The Spanish delegation included a participant in the Young Professionals Programme, which brings together future leaders in a unique opportunity to help shape the future of the industry.
