UNE-GECV meeting on environmental standards and challenges

10/07/2024

The Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, and the Spanish Group for Green Growth (GECV) share the goal of having economic activity help preserve the environment. Climate, the circular economy, natural capital, sustainable finance and the energy transition are part of the work programmes of both entities. As a result of this synergy, they held a meeting in which they discussed how standards can help support these goals.

As part of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the tools that standardization makes available to the business world to make progress not only in environmental performance, but also in social contribution and in refining internal governance, have been analysed.

At the meeting, the UNE report on how standards support ESG reporting was presented, followed by a debate on how the use of standards in preparing sustainability reports makes it easier for organizations to demonstrate their performance, while providing their investors and stakeholders with sustainability information on a sound and recognized basis.

Attendees were also able to learn about practical cases for applying standards to ESG, presented by the Basque Competition Authority and the Asociación Sostenibilidad Siderúrgica.

This meeting paves the way for joint efforts to help companies make progress in these goals and support the development of public policies in this area.

Present at the meeting were: Javier García, the Director General of UNE and Vice-President of ISO; Carmen Navarro, General Director of GECV; Iván Moya, Director of Sector Transformation at UNE; Rafael Iturriaga, Member of the Basque Competition Authority; and Esther Trujillo, Adviser of organizations and managers on CSR strategies and President of Asociación Sostenibilidad Siderúrgica.
