14 October is World Standards Day, and the UNE wishes to honour the tens of thousands of experts from around the world who take part in the development of standards that contribute to a better, fairer and more sustainable world. In Spain alone, around 13,000 experts collaborate in the development of technical standards within the Spanish standardization body, UNE.
This year's slogan is, as last year, "A shared vision for a better world: Standards for the SDGs", with which the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) are looking to highlight the contribution of international standards to achieving the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from the 2030 Agenda, showcasing how the public-private collaboration model represented by standardization activities successfully contributes to achieving a challenge of this magnitude.
The SDGs, which aim to address social imbalances, develop a sustainable economy and reduce the speed of climate change, are highly ambitious. Achieving them will require the cooperation of many public and private partners, and the use of all available tools, including international standards.
In addition, the battle against the global pandemic has revealed the need to address the SDGs in an inclusive way to strengthen societies, making them more resilient and equitable. In this goal, standards are more relevant than ever.
Standards provide the knowledge, consensus and collaboration that this global challenge requires, establishing a common language and measurable criteria.
The UNE celebrates World Standards Day, joining this event by recalling its purpose: to develop technical standards that contribute to the shared progress of society and to the creation of a safer, more sustainable and competitive world through dialogue and collaboration.
