World Standards Day: A shared vision for a better world

13/10/2023

World Standards Day is observed globally on October 14th, and the Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, wishes to honour the collaborative effort tens of thousands of experts from around the world who take part in the development of standards that contribute to a better, fairer and more sustainable world.  In Spain alone, around 13,000 experts collaborate in the development of technical standards within the Spanish standardization body, UNE.

This year's theme is the same as last year's, "A shared vision for a better world", with which the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) are seeking to highlight the contribution of international standards to achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from the 2030 Agenda. This year, the day focuses on SDG 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

International standards provide a global framework that facilitates the adoption of digital health technologies, research and development, the manufacture and maintenance of devices and health systems. This helps to ensure that the global population has access to medical devices, health services and effective, safe and reliable systems.

In addition, standards allow policymakers and regulators to achieve their political objectives with a view to improving the results of healthcare.

With the development of digital health technology, IEC, ISO and ITU standards, together with conformity assessment, contribute to ensuring the safety of systems and the protection of patient data.

The UNE celebrates World Standards Day, joining this event by recalling its purpose: develop technical standards that contribute to a socially cohesive society.
