The Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, has published the report UNE 49014 IN Packaging and packaging waste. The value of harmonized standards for the environmental management of packaging and packaging waste.
The aim of this regulatory document is to explain the value of harmonized standards in matters of environmental management of packaging and packaging waste, as a tool to help packagers, suppliers and distributors of packaged products to comply with the obligations imposed by Directive 94/62/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council, of 20 December 1994, regarding packaging and packaging waste and the national legislation that transposes it.
The document explains the nature of the harmonized standards and why they give presumption of conformity to public authorities.
The harmonized standards referred to in this report were published between 2000 and 2005 in order to help organizations comply with the essential requirements of the aforementioned directive. The passing of time and the arrival of new legislation has not caused these standards to lose their value. On the contrary, the new European legislative package on Circular Economy and Waste allows us to once again to focus on the importance of these standards and their fundamental role as a tool for companies to claim that their packaging complies with these.
