The Spanish Association for Standardisation, UNE, welcomes the publication by the European Commission of the European Union Competitiveness Compass. This strategic initiative is a robust commitment to Europe regaining a relevant role in international trade by fostering measures to make industry more competitive.
In particular, the Compass recognises the importance of standards as a strategic tool for the European economy, which not only strengthens the single market but also helps companies to access international markets. In particular, the paper highlights the value of standardisation as a mechanism for the deployment of European regulations and underlines the importance of leading the development of international standards to ensure that European interests are properly taken into account, helping industry to maintain competitive positions in key markets.
Technical standards are the basis of international trade, facilitating access to global markets and exports for Spanish economic sectors. More than 90% of world trade is supported by standards or associated technical regulations.
It also announces the future revision of Regulation (EU) No 1025/2012 on European Standardisation, aimed at maintaining the successful public-private collaboration between the European Standards Organisations and the European Commission for the development of harmonised standards, reflecting the results of European innovation developments. It is an opportunity to design a sustainable framework for a more agile and accessible European standardisation system, maintaining collaboration with international standardisation bodies, a key relationship for securing trade with third countries and regions at a global level.
