20 May 2019. The Spanish Association for Standardisation-UNE, has signed the Declaration on Integrating Gender Mainstreaming into Technical Norms and Standards, as part of its Development Process. Over 50 global, regional and national standardisation bodies have endorsed this UN-promoted initiative.

By signing this Declaration, the Spanish Standardisation Association, UNE, shows its commitment to gender equality and underlines the key role played by technical standards in complying with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, helping companies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Standards help organisations successfully overcome the challenges they face.

This Declaration is part of the Initiative to Integrate Gender Mainstreaming into Technical Standards that operates under the umbrella of the UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) Working Party on Regulatory Cooperation and Standardisation Policies (WP6).

This Working Group promotes the use of technical standards by policy-makers and companies as a tool for reducing technical barriers in trade; It encourages innovation and better governance; and it defends the use of technical standards in the implementation of all the UN's objectives, including the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

among other objectives, the Initiative to Integrate Gender Equality into Technical Standards aims to advocate the use of technical norms and standards as powerful tools for achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5, which pursues gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in general; it aims to integrate a gender equality policy into the development of technical norms, standards and regulations, and to establish gender indicators and criteria to be used when drafting technical norms, standards and regulations.
