  • UNE 178109 is a major milestone for Spain, Adif and all parties involved in its development, being the first worldwide standard in the field of passenger railway stations.

21 December 2018. The Spanish Association for Standardisation, UNE, has published the standard that defines a new smart station model for the future, called UNE 178109 'Smart Cities. Smart station and smart city platform connection'. This standard has been boosted by Adif and experts from all parties involved have participated in its drafting, following the principles of consensus, openness and transparency.

This standard's publication, drafted in UNE's CTN 178 "Intelligent Cities" Technical Standardisation Committee - an initiative fostered by the Secretary of State for Digital Advancement (SEAD- MINECO) and directed by SEGITTUR (MINCOTUR) - is a major milestone for Spanish Standardisation, Adif and all parties involved in its development, as it is a world first in the scope of stations, setting a benchmark for other countries.

The need to draft this new norm is due to the ongoing changes in the habits of station users, which, in turn, lead to changes in the way stations are understood and work, turning them into a new place focussed on people and their needs in today's world. Stations are currently in the process of transformation due to innovative and technological applications which improve their efficiency, and, in turn, increase sustainability, safety, usability and accessibility, as well as improving traveller experience and that of other citizens using station services.

To this end, Adif has formed a multidisciplinary group within the Spanish standardisation organisation, working in-depth to define what the new smart station will be like: an integral part of the city and its citizens, encompassing the very essence of passenger service, usability, technological improvement and insight into the future.

This initiative is part of Adif's strategic plan (Plan Transforma 2020), included in its strategic 'Passenger Station Comprehensive Plan' and the 'smart station implementation' section. The standard also contributes to the UN's SDG 9 Sustainable Development Goals (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
