  • It establishes the requirements for the installation, use and maintenance of the fire retardant curtains.

19 September 2019. The Spanish Association for Standardisation, UNE, has published a new standard: the Standard UNE 23740-2 on Fire safety. Gap closing elements. Specific requirements for installation, use, maintenance. Part 2: Fire retardant curtains. This standard has been drawn up by the Technical Standardisation Committee CTN 23 UNE Fire Safety, whose secretariat performs TECNIFUEGO, the Spanish Association of Fire Protection Societies, through Subcommittee SC 7 on Fire Resistant Elements.

Fire retardant curtains are part of a building's fire protection strategy, regardless of its geometry or activity. These elements are designed to prevent the spread of fire from one building sector to another over a certain period of time. While design is paramount, elements must also be properly installed and maintained so that they can fulfil the function for which they have been developed.

Formulated with the participation of all the parties involved and the result of consensus, this standard establishes the specific requirements that must be taken into account for the installation, use and maintenance of fire retardant curtains, in order to ensure that these elements perform the function for which they have been designed throughout their useful life.

The regulatory document applies to the fire retardant curtains tested, in accordance with Standard UNE-EN 1634-1, including irrigated fire retardant curtains. The regulatory annexes must be taken into account with regard to the training that competent personnel must be given to carry out installation and maintenance, as well as the documentation that must accompany fire retardant curtains.

Standards are effective tools for supporting the implementation of public policies and legislation. In fact, 12% of the UNE Standards catalogue appears in national legislation.

These standards reflect the market consensus on best practices in key aspects for the competitiveness of organisations.
