New UNE standard on Fire-fighting water supply systems

06/11/2018

  • UNE 23500 guarantees that water arrives in proper flow and pressure conditions to the different systems and equipment, thereby providing an adequate response in the event of fire.
  • Technical standards support Public Administrations in the effective deployment of public policies. For example, the Regulation for fire prevention systems makes reference to over 140 UNE standards.

6 November 2018. The Spanish Association for Standardisation, UNE, has just published the new version of the standard has just been published on "Fire-fighting water supply systems", which cancels and replaces its previous 2012 version. This standard aims to guarantee that water arrives in proper flow and pressure conditions to the different systems and equipment, thereby providing an adequate response in the event of fire.

The use of water as an extinguishing agent for fixed fire extinguishing systems is widely used, such as the use of sprinklers, hydrants, water mist, water spray, fitted fire hydrants and other system types.

These systems are designed, installed and maintained in accordance with Royal Decree 513/2017 governing the Regulation for fire prevention systems. This is largely supported by the UNE standards drawn up by the Technical Standardisation Committee (CTN 23) on Fire prevention, the Secretariat of which is TECNIFUEGO. Specifically, this regulation makes reference to over 140 UNE standards. Technical standards increasingly support Public Administrations in the effective deployment of public policies. In fact, 12% of Spanish standards (consisting of over 32,000 standards) are quoted in the national legislation.
