30 May 2019. More than 4,000 UNE standards in the Spanish catalogue comprising nearly 33,000 standards help companies achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from the UN's 2030 Agenda. This announcement was made by the Spanish Association for Standardisation-UNE, on the occasion of its General Meeting for the financial year 2018. In this, UNE introduced its Strategic 2019 to 2021 Plan, which aims to help companies and public administrations promote the application of the standards they need to meet their challenges.
SDGs are an illustrative example. Rules or standards help organisations achieve one or more Sustainable Development Goals, as they provide a common language and measurable criteria that are based on the knowledge, consensus and collaboration that this global challenge requires. Standards are documents within everyone's reach which give a market consensus on good practices when dealing with key business issues.
The numerous standards in the Spanish catalogue help companies and organisations achieve SDG 9 on Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure. One of the most important of these is the UNE-EN ISO 9001 Quality Management Standard. It is the most widespread quality management tool in the world, and over one million organisations effectively implement it.
The UNE 0060 and UNE 0061 Specifications that state the requirements for an Industry to be considered Digital are also particularly important. The standards have been created by UNE with the participation and consensus of a group of experts under the impetus of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism to facilitate the digitisation of Spanish industry.
There are several standards that help companies and organisations achieve SDG 3 on Health and Wellbeing, which aims to guarantee universal health coverage and the wellbeing of the global population. One of these is UNE 179003 on Patient Safety. Furthermore, in 2018 standard ISO 45001 on Management of Health and Safety at Work was published.
Organisations can use several standards to help them achieve SDG 13 on Climate Action, which seeks to take urgent measures to fight climate change.
In addition, UNE 178501 on Intelligent Tourist Destinations helps companies and organisations achieve SDG 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities. It is a world first Spanish Standard. All the standards of CTN 178 help organisations achieve this SDG.
