AEE and UNE have held the Seminar Standardisation of offshore wind energy. An opportunity for industrial positioning for Spain, with the participation of leading sectoral experts.
25 June, 2021 This morning, the Spanish Wind Energy Association (AEE) and the Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, held the offshore wind standardization meeting. An opportunity for industrial positioning in Spain in which leading experts underlined the key role of standardisation in the competitiveness and global leadership of the Spanish wind power industry. The online event attracted a great deal of interest and brought together more than 120 professionals from various organisations.
Wind energy has a long tradition in Spain, the fifth country in the world and the second in Europe in terms of installed wind power. It thus constitutes an opportunity for the industrial positioning of our country, allowing us to advance in the ecological transition and contribute to decarbonisation and climate change mitigation. In this context, the industry is committed to national, European and international standardisation as one of its competitive axes; in many cases, leading key international standards for our interests.
Today there are more than 40 UNE standards that drive the Spanish wind industry, establishing the common language with the best global practices. The standards harmonise requirements for design, manufacturing, testing, control systems and communications, as well as all aspects related to wind energy projects and installations. These standards are developed in UNE's Technical Committee for Standardisation CTN 206/SC 88 on Wind energy generation systems, whose secretariat is managed by AEE.
The event highlighted how the Spanish offshore wind industry is represented throughout the value chain, including in the design and development of specific offshore wind turbine technology, and in all the components necessary for the construction and maintenance of offshore wind farms. A key aspect of this value chain is the integration of all elements through standardisation. By taking advantage of all its knowledge and experience in onshore wind, the Spanish industry is positioning itself as a leader in the standardisation of offshore wind, thanks to the involvement of all the actors in the sector.
These technical standards also facilitate the use of offshore wind in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. Illustrative examples are SDG 7 Affordable and clean energy, SDG 8 Decent work and economic growth and SDG 9 Industry, innovation and infrastructure.
