Madrid, 24 November 2023 - The International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which is responsible for preparing the future ISO 53800 Standard on gender equality and women's empowerment, approved the passage of the working draft to its final phase at the meeting held in Madrid this week. The standard is expected to be published in the spring of 2024.
Spain, through the Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, and as a national member of the ISO, is one of the countries that is actively collaborating on the preparation of this standard, with the aim of bringing together a set of directives to promote and implement gender equality and empower women in companies and all types of organisations. The UNE headquarters hosted the meeting of the international ISO committee.
ISO 53800 will become the first international ISO standard aimed at promoting gender equality in organisations. Over 100 experts and 62 countries from around the world are involved in preparing the standard, which demonstrates the high interest that is being sparked at global level. Spain is participating in the initiative through the Standardisation Technical Committee CTN-UNE 194, chaired by Val Díez, Chair of the CEOE Equality and Diversity Committee.
UNE's Chairman, Alfredo Berges, highlighted that "the future ISO 53800 Standard demonstrates how standardisation provides an effective response to the major challenges within society by contributing to building a better world and helping organisations to meet Goal Number Five from the United Nations Sustainable Development (SDG) 2030 Agenda. This standard will galvanise willpower and have a knock-on effect, from one organisation to another, and from one region of the planet to another, so that more and more organisations commit to gender equality".
The future Standard proposes a model to achieve equality between women and men in any organisation, based on its situation and with a commitment to continuous improvement. The goal is for each organisation to commit to achieving effective and real gender equality and to set goals based on its situation and context.
As part of the international meeting of the ISO Committee, UNE organised an event on Thursday 23 November, which was attended by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism's Director-General of Industry and SMEs María José Muñoz; the ISO/PC 337 Chair Denis Roth-Fichol; the UNE National Mirror Committee and CEOE Equality and Diversity Commission Chair Val Díez; the UNE Director-General and ISO Vice president Javier García; The event was also attended by the Ministry of Equality's Deputy Director-General for Entrepreneurship, Equality in the Workplace and Women's Collective Bargaining Begoña Suárez, and representatives from organisations that have actively participated in developing the standard: EJE&CON, SIEMENS España and ICONG, among others.
Translation into Spanish
UNE has started the process within the ISO to translate the future ISO 53800 standard into Spanish, to make it easier to understand and use for the nearly 500 million Spanish speakers in the world. The UNE will also perform various activities to raise awareness of this standard in conjunction with the Communication and Engagement group, coordinated by Isabel Alonso (EJE&CON).
Publication of this pioneering standard helps to launch a tool that promotes both gender equality and economic and social development. Equality policies represent a commitment to society and help improve results in organizations in terms of personnel turnover, productivity and innovation at work, more effective collaboration, better performance, market expansion and other areas.
