UNE and CEOE present the first global standard on gender equality

  • The Spanish Association for Standardization (UNE) and the CEOE Equality and Diversity Commission have presented Standard UNE-ISO 53800 Guidelines for the Promotion and Implementation of Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.

  • The UNE-ISO 53800 Standard, proposes a model to achieve equality between women and men in any organization with a commitment to continuous improvement, which includes guidelines, tools, good practice and other resources.

  • Spain has actively participated in the development of the standard through the UNE Gender Equality Committee, chaired by Val Díez, President of the CEOE's Equality and Diversity Commission and CEO of STANPA.

  • Madrid, 21 June 2024 - The Spanish Association for Standardization (UNE) and the CEOE Equality and Diversity Commission presented today at CEOE's headquarters in Madrid, Standard UNE-ISO 53800: Guidelines for the Promotion and Implementation of Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.

    More than 100 experts from 62 countries around the world have worked on the development of this pioneering international standard. Spain actively participated through the UNE Gender Equality Committee (CTN-UNE 194), led by Val Díez, President of CEOE's Equality and Diversity Commission and CEO of STANPA. As a national member of ISO, UNE also led the process of translating the ISO 53800 standard into Spanish, to make it easier to understand and use for the nearly 500 million Spanish speakers around the world.

    This global pioneering standard offers a working model for equality in organizations, regardless of business, type or size, which includes guidelines, tools, best practices and other resources that will help organizations assess their current situation, identify barriers and opportunities, and develop specific actions. The goal is for each organization to commit to real gender equality and to set goals based on its situation and context, and to look for equally committed partners and collaborators, creating a network of real and effective equality.

    “Equality and diversity policies help organisations to improve their competitiveness and drive innovation, and are fundamental for building a strong economy and a fair society. The UNE-ISO 53800 Standard will provide Spanish companies with objective support to strengthen their commitment to equality", stated Val Díez.

    According to Javier García, Director General of UNE and Vice-president of ISO, “This international standard establishes a road map to help organisations achieve effective and real gender equality. The standard will galvanise willpower and have a knock-on effect, from one organisation to another, and from one region of the planet to another.

    The conference featured leading experts who explained the foundations of this international standard and its transformative potential and pertinence in organisational culture. The following experts took part: Val Díez, President of the UNE Committee on Gender Equality; Javier García, Director General of UNE and Vice-President of ISO; Elena Ordozgoiti, Head of the UNE Services Sector María Muñoz, Adviser to the Directorate General of Industrial Strategy and SMEs of the Ministry of Industry and Tourism; María Jesús Aguado, Technical Advisor of the ​Sub-Directorate for Entrepreneurship, Equality in Business and Collective Bargaining of the Ministry of Equality's Women's Institute; Isabel Alonso, member of the Good Corporate Governance Committee of the Asociación Española de Ejecutiv@s y Consejer@s (EJE&CON); and Julián Vicente Bravo, Director of TPM, Engineering and Technical Support Airbus Project at SIEMENS
