First report of the UNE Renewable Electricity Forum

15/03/2024

  • The Renewable Electricity Forum of the Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, has published its first report, aiming to highlight the role of standards as valuable tools in the development of regulatory documents.

  • The aim of this Forum is to coordinate Spanish interests in this area. It brings together the main players in the renewable energy sector in Spain (hydro, solar photovoltaic, solar thermal, wind, marine and fuel cells, with the participation of all levels of government).

  • Standardisation contributes to the political and macroeconomic context by driving the energy transition. In Spain, targets aim to achieve 81% renewables in electricity generation by 2030 and to increase installed renewable capacity to 160 GW out of a total of 240 GW.

Madrid, 15 March 2024The Renewable Electricity Forum of the Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, has published its first reportRenewable Electricity and Public Policy, which aims to highlight the role of standards as valuable tools in the development of regulatory documents, both at national and European level. The Forum is confident that future legislative developments in electrical renewable energies will be supported by the catalogue of UNE Standards, thus fostering collaboration between the Administration, companies and standardisation.

The Forum aims to coordinate Spanish interests in standardisation in the field of renewable energies for the production, distribution and management of electrical energy, as well as to disseminate information affecting the sector or any of its subsectors. It serves as a meeting place where the possibilities offered by standardisation in the sector are explored and shared synergies and opportunities are exploited. It brings together the main players in the renewable energy sector in Spain (hydro, solar photovoltaic, solar thermal, wind, marine and fuel cells, with the participation of all levels of government).

The "Renewable Electricity and Public Policy" report provides a brief introduction to standardisation and then delves into the role of standards in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The core of the report addresses the six main renewable energies with activity in technical standardisation committees.

Standardisation contributes to the political and macroeconomic context by driving the energy transition. The European Union has defined five dimensions (decarbonisation, energy efficiency, energy security, internal energy market, and research, innovation and competitiveness) as part of its goal of a prosperous, modern, competitive and climate-neutral economy by 2050. In Spain, according to the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan, the objectives are to achieve 81% renewables in electricity generation by 2030 and to increase installed renewable capacity to 160 GW out of a total of 240 GW.

A concern shared by the energy sub-sectors is the need for regulation to support the achievement of these objectives. UNE's renewable electricity committees work collaboratively to contribute to these goals, a task that has intensified since the creation of this Forum in 2022.
