Workshop on Quantum Technologies: European Standardization and Ecosystems

01/12/2025

The Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) and the European project QuTechSpace, organized, on 29 October 2025, the Workshop Quantum Technologies: European Standardization and Ecosystem, an event that brought together international experts, European institutions and leading companies in the sector to discuss the advances and challenges in the standardization of quantum technologies.

The event took place in a hybrid format at UNE's headquarters (Madrid) with online attendance, as part of the CEN/CLC JTC22 plenary meeting on “Quantum Technologies”, also held in the Spanish capital.

During the conference, the main ongoing European projects on quantum standardization were analysed, and the technological challenges in quantum computing, communication, and metrology were addressed, along with the opportunities that standardization offers to strengthen the European quantum ecosystem.

The workshop included the participation of prominent representatives from international organizations such as Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (Germany), National Physical Laboratory (United Kingdom), PASQAL (France), Qtlabs GmbH (Austria), and others.

Additionally, the QuTechSpace initiative was presented, focusing on satellite-based quantum communication and the standardization requirements associated with the development of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). This segment was moderated by Vicente Martín, Professor at the UPM and coordinator of the CEN/CLC JTC22/WG4 group on Quantum Communications and Cryptography, and featured experts from HISPASAT, GMV and LaiQa.

The event concluded with a panel dedicated to the Spanish quantum technology ecosystem, highlighting the progress of national entities in quantum research, development, and innovation, as well as their active participation in UNE technical committees and the CEN/CLC JTC22 group.

With more than 100 attendees, the event reaffirmed UNE's commitment to standardization as a driver of technological and industrial development in Europe, promoting interoperability, security and competitiveness in the quantum field.
