On 25 June, the Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, held an online UNE Meeting: “What's new in the standard ISO 14001 – Environmental Management Systems” to analyse the progress and changes planned in the revision of this Standard, as well as its impact on the environmental management of Spanish organisations. If you want to see what's new in this standard, read the article by Ana Benedicto, secretary of the UNE Environmental Management Committee (CTN-UNE 150), in the UNE magazine.
During the event, experts from the UNE Environmental Management Committee (CTN-UNE 150) presented the current status of modification of the ISO 14001 standard, and more than 150 entities attending the Meeting had the opportunity to learn about the guidelines that will facilitate the adaptation of their environmental management systems to the new focus. The new version of the standard will be available in 2026.
The lines addressed through this modification focus on incorporating content from the SL appendix, improving guidance in appendix A, reformulating current requirements, including notes or using other methods to clarify requirements, without adding new requirements.
Key issues associated with the requirements that will be clarified in the new version are: alignment with strategy, business processes, and the integrated approach of the management system; the context, risks and opportunities, and their relationship with other clauses; the life cycle perspective; external reports; environmental responsibility, culture, and employee engagement; and outsourced processes and the supply chain.
The meeting also served to share the vision of the impact and benefits of this new version of the Standard, for all types of entities committed to quality in environmental management, and as a strategic tool for compliance with new sustainability regulations.
The presentation involved Ana Benedicto Córdoba, secretary of the UNE Environmental Management Committee (CTN-UNE 150); José Manuel González Estévez, President of the UNE Environmental Management Committee (CTN-UNE 150) Margarita Abelaira Fernández, expert accredited by CTN-UNE 150 in ISO/TC 207/SC 1/WG 15 Amd ISO 14001, Technical Coordinator CORE Certification – R Atlántica, Technical Assurance Department Confidere Corporation (AENOR)
