Workshop: "Digitalisation of the Built Environment standardisation and practical applications of BIM-GIS integration ”

12/05/2025

The Spanish Association for Standardisation, UNE, INECO and the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) hosted on 12 May at INECO's headquarters in Madrid the Workshop “Digitalisation of the Built Environment: standardisation and practical applications of BIM-GIS integration". This event is a follow-up to the Technical Conference organised by UNE and AMB in February 2025 in Barcelona which unpacked the standards related to digital twins and how to integrate mapping information into the IFC structure.

Its purpose was to kick off a participatory process for developing the UNE Standard on information exchange between BIM and GIS, which is being led by Subcommittee 2 of the UNE Committee for Standardisation on Digitalisation of information of building and civil engineering works (CTN-UNE 332).

The event consisted of a workshop on the integration of GIS mapping information in BIM formats, in particular IFC, to which experts from local councils, regions, universities, software developers, planners and builders, professional associations and other stakeholders were invited.

Aitor Aragón, UNE's head of Sustainable Construction and BIM, opened the Workshop with Jorge Torrico, Digital Engineering and BIM manager at INECO. The technical presentations were given by Montserrat Monteagudo, Director of Cartography Innovation Projects at AMB and Chair of the CTN-UNE 332/SC 2, and her colleague Maria Duran, who is taking part as an expert in the ISO group which is developing BIM-GIS integration documents.

During the workshop, three work panels were set up which addressed two main issues: the content of a future UNE Standard on the integration of mapping information in IFC and a consultation with professionals which is to be run to gather additional information.

The CTN-UNE 332/SC 2 met in the afternoon with the results of the workshop to hand to set out the next steps. The meeting was attended by Erik Poirier, who is coordinating ISO standard projects on BIM-GIS integration.

In a constantly evolving sector such as construction and infrastructure, standardisation plays a key role in ensuring interoperability, efficiency and sustainability in its digital transformation.
