UNE meeting: Sustainability of buildings and transport infrastructure: developments in standardization and public policies

​​​​​The Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, held the UNE Meeting on the Sustainability of Buildings and Transport Infrastructure on 11 November at its headquarters, also broadcast online, with a total of 64 participants. Experts discussed the latest developments in standardization and public policy in this field.

UNE’s Construction Sustainability Committee focused on the review of the building assessment standard UNE-EN 15804, referenced in the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, and the standardization mandate that the European Commission will issue to evaluate the environmental sustainability and resilience of transport infrastructure.

In this context, Paloma García, Director of Standardization Programmes and Stakeholder Groups at UNE, and Arturo Alarcón, Secretary of CTN 198 and Head of Sustainability and Sustainable Construction at IECA, explained UNE, CEN, and ISO’s work on the sustainability of buildings and transport infrastructure.

José Antonio Tenorio, Chair of CTN 198/SC 1 and Senior Scientist at IETcc-CSIC, presented updates on the new EN 15978, whose publication as a European standard is scheduled for December this year. Antonio Burgueño, Chair of CTN 198 and Director of Quality and Corporate Social Responsibility at FCC Construcción, focused on ongoing discussions with the European Commission to define the five standards for assessing the sustainability and resilience of roads, railways, ports, and airports

Miguel Gómez Meiras, Convenor of the CEN Workshop “Carbon Bill” and Technical Manager at the CIRCE Foundation, described the developments of the European CHRONICLE project, in which UNE participates, specifically the new CWA on the “carbon bill” for building refurbishment, published by CEN/CENELEC.

During the round table Cristina Fernández, Head of Sustainability in Architecture at the Dept. of Technology at IECA; Juan Queipo de Llano, Head of the Construction Quality Unit at IETcc-CSIC; Laura Parra, Director of the Centre for Transport Studies (CET) at CEDEX; Miguel García, Secretary CTN-UNE 198/SC 3 and Technical Director of CEPCO; and Aitor Aragón, Head of Sustainable Construction and BIM at UNE, discussed the integration of CEN/TC 350 standards into public policies and how they can be used to enhance the sustainability of the construction industry.
