UNE meeting: "Towards a BIOCIRCULAR production model: Innovation and Standards"

12/11/2025

The Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, together with the Spanish Biocircularity Association (BIOCIRC), held the UNE Meeting “Towards a BIOCIRCULAR production model: Innovation and Standards", at its headquarters on 27 October in a hybrid format. The main aim of the event was to present the proposal to create a National Standardization Committee on Biocircularity, an initiative driven by the standardization needs identified in the prospective study “Utilization and Recovery of Residual Biomass”, carried out by UNE with the participation of various key stakeholders in the sector.

This new committee will provide a coordinated sectoral response to the different national, European, and international scenarios, promoting the development of standards and documents covering the entire biocircular value chain, from raw materials, processes, and transformative technologies, to the end-of-waste stage, bioproducts, and cross-cutting aspects such as sustainability, traceability, or local biohubs.

As part of the commitment to new production models, the event explored how biocircularity is driving a paradigm shift in sectors such as agriculture, livestock, forestry, and related industries, closing production cycles through the use of organic raw materials and the gradual replacement of fossil-based materials with renewable alternatives.

The main conclusions of the study “Utilization and Recovery of Residual Biomass” were also reviewed, alongside the current state of the sector and the challenges and opportunities for advancing towards a truly biocircular and innovative production model.

The event was attended by Jaime Botella, Head of Business Development at UNE; Ana Benedicto, Project Manager for Innovation and Environment at UNE; and Margarita de Gregorio, CEO of BIOCIRC, who discussed the key aspects of the initiative and the role of standardization in promoting the biocircular economy.

The session concluded with a Q&A and the closing of the meeting, highlighting the interest generated by this initiative and the opportunity to establish a robust regulatory framework that fosters innovation and sustainability in the biocircular economy.

The phase to express interest in joining the new committee is now open, allowing participants to contribute to its definition from the outset by filling in the membership form available on this website, which they should send in completed to info@une.org.
