The UNE highlights the important role of standards in the sustainability of buildings at the 37th AMETIC Meeting

05/09/2023

The Spanish Association for Standardization (UNE) took part in the 37th Digital Economy and Telecommunications Meeting, organized by AMETIC, the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP) and Banco Santander.

The Director of Standardization Programmes and Stakeholder Engagement at UNE, Paloma García, took part in the panel "Buildings facing the challenge of sustainability", which also featured Eduardo Valencia, Director of Electronic Industry, New Entrepreneurship and Territorial Development at AMETIC, and José Luis Fernández, Managing Director of Strategy at TELEVÉS.

At the start of her presentation, Paloma García explained how the initial idea behind quality and safety standards has evolved to become the cornerstone of a resilient, ecological and digital European market. The UNE is the platform that allows Spanish industry to take part in and influence the future standards that will shape this market.

She then went on to underscore the relevant contribution of technical standards to the sustainability of buildings from a triple perspective: construction, installation and digitization products and infrastructures, and how they underpin the various regulations. Along these lines, she noted how standards harmonize the methodology for assessing the overall energy efficiency of buildings, supporting the work of architects, engineers and legislators and implementing Directive 2010/31/EU, on the energy efficiency of buildings (recently amended).

In addition, the UNE representative highlighted the importance of recent developments in sensorization and IoT and the Spanish standards on smart buildings, which represent agreements that will be used to share, compare and manage what goes on inside buildings. She also mentioned new work being done to assess the energy efficiency of buildings based on sensors and a BIM model.

AMETIC has been a member of UNE since its founding and actively participates in the development of key standards for the digitization of organizations.
