2nd annual plenary meeting of the UNE Market Surveillance Observatory

21/10/2022

The second annual Plenary meeting of the UNE Market Surveillance Observatory was held on 19 October with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of compliance with technical standards and legislation and enhancing public-private collaboration. The OVM consists of more than 40 business organizations, UNE members, and the Ministries of Consumer Affairs, Industry, Trade and Tourism, and Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation.

The meeting approved, among other matters, the content of the 2022 Annual Report on the status of Market Surveillance in Spain. This document, which will be published in the next few months, continues on from the first annual OVM report, which analyses the market situation in relation to regulatory and legislative compliance, in order to prevent the marketing of unsafe products and services that cause damage to the economy and consumers and create unfair competition for organizations that are in compliance.

The aim is to improve the functioning of the internal market through surveillance, to ensure that products sold comply with legislation and meet technical standards and thus contribute to increased consumer and market confidence, economic growth, business development and job creation.

In addition, the Market Surveillance Observatory was mentioned in the National Strategic Framework for Market Surveillance in Spain (MENVIME) 2022-2025.

The Market Surveillance Observatory seeks to strengthen public-private collaboration between public administrations and companies in the framework of the new European Regulation (EU) 2019/1020 on Market Surveillance and Product Conformity, and to reflect the importance of compliance with standardisation, providing credibility in the market, boosting industrial activity and providing a guarantee to consumers.

Precisely to raise awareness of the importance of regulatory compliance, the UNE has developed a communication campaign this year involving various videos. In them, experts from government agencies, market supervisory authorities and relevant Spanish associations, UNE members, share their point of view on the importance of proper market surveillance.
