Publishing of the Study "The economic impact of standardisation in Spain"

30/07/2025

On 9 July, the Report "The Economic Impact of Standardisation in Spain", was presented. It was prepared by the Centre for Industrial Strategy and Foresight (CEPI), an entity promoted by the Ministry of Industry and Tourism and the EOI Foundation. The presentation took place at the headquarters of the Spanish Association for Standardisation (UNE).

The study reveals that standardisation contributes 14.7% to Spain's average annual GDP growth, which translates into a contribution of more than €140 billion over the last four decades, placing Spain on a par with the world's most advanced countries.

This report combines a macroeconomic analysis, which follows the ISO international methodological guide, with a microeconomic approach supported by a survey of 600 industrial and construction companies. The results confirm that standardisation is a strategic lever for boosting productivity, competitiveness and the international projection of the Spanish business sector.

The study also highlights that accelerating the pace of new standard development by 5% annually could add more than €23 billion to Spain’s GDP by 2028, raising the projection to €1,373,071 million in that year compared to the current baseline scenario.

Promoting and facilitating the implementation of standards, especially among small and medium-sized enterprises, is a strategic opportunity for Spain to consolidate its position among the most advanced economies in standardisation, strengthening key productive sectors and growing business competitiveness in the long term.

The event was attended by Jordi García Brustenga, Secretary of State for Industry at the Ministry of Industry and Tourism: Alfredo Berges, Chair of UNE; Víctor Ausín, Director General of Economic Policy, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Business; Maribel Martínez, Managing Partner of Abay Analistas; Gema de Cabo, Project Director at Abay Analistas; José Manuel Prieto, Deputy Director of Security and Industrial Quality of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism; Monica Sanzo; Director of International Cooperation and Relations at UNE; Luis Rodulfo, Vice-President of UNE and President of CEPCO; José Bayón, General Director of EOI; and Javier García, Director General of UNE and Vice-President of ISO.
