The International Standards Organisation (ISO) has published the new text of the Standard ISO 56001:2024 Innovation Management System. Requirements, marking a milestone in innovation worldwide. It has already been adopted as European standard EN ISO 56001 and will be available in the Spanish catalogue of the Spanish Association for Standardisation, UNE, in early 2025.
It is the first global standard that contains requirements for organisations around the world to establish, implement, maintain, and improve an innovation management system and is therefore certifiable by an independent third party. The structured framework it provides for innovation reduces uncertainty and increases the likelihood of obtaining profits, with a focus on continuous improvement and value creation.
The ISO 56001 Standard has been developed by the International Standardization Technical Committee ISO/TC 279 on Innovation management, which includes innovation experts from 57 countries across five continents, making it the result of a broad consensus within the international community. It is designed to be flexible and applicable to all types of organisations, regardless of their type, size or the products and services they supply.
It forms part of the family of ISO 56000 Standards, which focus on innovation management. This series includes ten regulatory documents that address aspects such as ideas management, innovation partnerships, strategic intelligence management, measurement of innovation operations, and intellectual property management, among others.
In Spain, this ISO Standard replaces the historic Standard UNE 166002, a pioneer in the world, as it was the first published standard dedicated to normalizing R&D&I management systems.
