Spain approves the first UNE Specification on data spaces

17/07/2025

The Data Spaces Reference Centre (CRED) of the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Function led the first UNE Specification on data spaces in Spain, in collaboration with the Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE.

The UNE 0087 Specification marks a milestone in the regulatory development of the data economy, and contributes legal and technical security, encourages trust and facilitates interoperability and value creation across all sectors. In addition, it contributes to accelerating the development of projects and use cases by offering a common language and clear requirements, thus promoting competitiveness, innovation and digital cohesion.

The new standard, developed within the UNE Subcommittee on Government, Data Management and Data Spaces (CTN-UNE 71/SC 43) and prepared with the active collaboration of more than 50 public and private participants, is configured as a technical reference guide for the creation of secure, reliable data spaces aligned with current European regulations.

The document defines the key elements of data spaces, structuring them around three fundamental pillars: interoperability, which facilitates technical and organisational integration between different systems and entities, allowing for streamlined collaboration; governance, which includes the principles, rules and mechanisms necessary to manage and regulate the data space, and value creation, which drives the development of new business models and innovative use cases.

The Specification defines the concept of data space as a key instrument for data sharing in an inclusive and technologically agnostic manner, ensuring its applicability in all productive sectors.
