Global standard for safe tourism in the context of COVID-19, published in Spanish

01/07/2021

The Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, has published the UNE-ISO/PAS 5643 Specification on Tourism and related services. Requirements and guidelines for the reduction of Covid-19 transmission in the tourism industry, translated into Spanish and now adopted into the national catalogue of standards.

The circle is thus closed on this world standard, the global reference in this field led by Spain through UNE, the Spanish member of ISO and the Spanish Institute for Tourism Quality (ICTE), with the support of the Secretary of State for Tourism of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism.

The ISO PAS 5643 Specification establishes the requirements and recommendations for reducing the spread of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 in the tourism industry, offering safer services and generating confidence among tourists, residents and employees. This Specification will help the various tourism sub-sectors prepare to offer safe services in line with international best practice.

The origin of the ISO/PAS 5643 specification goes back to the urgent assignment issued by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism through the Secretary of State for Tourism to the ICTE in April 2020, with the objective of achieving harmonised protocols at state level. These 22 documents were validated by the Ministry of Health and subsequently became the series UNE 0066 Specifications Measures for the reduction of SARS-CoV-2 infection, the origin of the international document ISO/PAS 5643.

At the request of the European Commission, which earlier this year asked for a European standard and label in the field, the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) has adopted the ISO/PAS 5643 specification in identical form as a CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA 5643 Part 1).Furthermore, UNE and the ICTE have led the development of CWA 5643 Part 2 Tourism and related services - Requirements and recommendations for the reduction of the spread of Covid-19 in the tourism industry - European visual image.
