The Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, has presented the report Support for the Standardization of the Digital Economy, drawn up with the collaboration of AMETIC, in which it analyses how technical standards or standards on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) will play a key role in ensuring the success of the digital single market, as acknowledged by the European Commission itself, which estimates that a true digital single market would contribute 415,000 million to the EU's GDP and generate hundreds of thousands of new jobs.
This report was presented today at the 33rd Digital Economy and Telecommunications Meeting in Santander, organised by AMETIC and supported by the Spanish standardisation body.
Standards guarantee interoperability and trust in the digital transformation process. Standards reflect the market consensus on best practices in key aspects for the competitiveness of organisations, providing an effective response to the major challenges facing companies and public administrations.
Overall, there are more than 2,600 UNE standards in the Spanish catalogue that will boost the digital single market, contributing to generating confidence in organisations in the ICT sector. New ones will be added to these in the fields where a need to develop standards is identified. Illustrative examples are the recent Specifications UNE 0060 and UNE 0061. Promoted by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, and drawn up with a broad consensus, they establish the requirements for considering a Digital Industry.
In the report, UNE identifies 13 areas in which standards are a fundamental pillar for the success of the digital single market and where there is greater standardisation activity, explaining the existing committees, the published standards and the projects being drawn up. The topics range from Digital Enabling Technologies (DET) to Industry 4.0, cybersecurity and citizen protection, smart cities, car connectivity and sustainable mobility, digital health, public sector, consumer electronics, collaborative economy or innovation, among others.
Access to international standards
UNE is building a standardisation strategy in ICT that allows Spanish organisations to influence and lead the international standards being developed in this area. The Spanish standardisation body carries the voice of experts from Spanish companies to European and global forums where key standards for their competitiveness are drawn up. For example, UNE has set up the Technical Standardisation Committee (TSC) on Cybersecurity and data protection, which will be the direct channel of Spanish influence in the drafting of European and international standards.
Standards, a support for the SDGs
UNE has identified more than 4,000 standards that help companies to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of UN Agenda 2030. Standards facilitate organisations to achieve one or more Sustainable Development Goals, as they provide a common language and measurable criteria, based on the knowledge, consensus and collaboration required by this global challenge.
