23 June 2020. The Spanish Association for Standardization has awarded its UNE Awards 2020, recognising the outstanding contribution of individuals and organisations to standardisation.

The awards ceremony took place during the annual meeting of the chairpersons and secretaries of the Technical Committees for Standardisation (CTNs), which was held online this year, with the participation of more than 200 CTN chairpersons and secretaries from sector associations, companies, public administrations and other organisations. These sessions strengthen the multi-sectorial collaborative environment represented by UNE, strengthening the associative model as an effective guarantee of response to the needs of Spanish companies and public administrations.

The UNE Awards for a Chairperson, CTN and Member of a CTN recognise individuals and organisations for their involvement in the development of UNE standards. The Awards also recognise the integration of standardisation innovation.

The Awards were presented, respectively, on:

  • UNE Award for the most outstanding Presidency in 2020: Manuel Carbó, president of CTN 118 Tobacco and tobacco products.
The prize was awarded for his work to invigorate and promote the activities of this CTN. Manuel Carbó is Director of the Centre for Research and Quality Control in the Directorate-General for Consumer Affairs of the Ministry of Health, Consumer Affairs and Social Welfare.
  • UNE Award for the most outstanding CTC: CTC 211 Electrical energy cables, whose Secretariat is managed by FACEL (Spanish Association of Manufacturers of Electrical and Optical Fibre Cables and Conductors). This recognition has been awarded to its Secretary: Xavier Cesari. The award recognises the positive impact of the activities of this CTN on organisations in its sector, as well as its dynamic capacity and professionalism in complying with the procedures established in the standardisation system.
  • UNE award for the most distinguished membership, Roberto Arias and Susana Rodríguez of the company Zitron, for their membership in CTN 100 Climate Control.
The prize recognizes their dedication and history with this committee. Zitron is dedicated to the manufacture of ventilation systems for tunnels, and for 15 years it has been committed to the benefits of participating in standardization.
  • UNE Award for Integration of Standardisation in Innovation.  The award went to Tecnalia, represented by its CEO Iñaki San Sebastian.
The Award recognises their outstanding contribution in applying and promoting the integration of standardisation in R&D&I activities. As well as participating in over 40 technical standardisation bodies, Tecnalia has collaborated with UNE on 26 proposals for European Horizon 2020 projects.

The aim of these awards, granted by the Spanish Standardisation Body, is to acknowledge the commitment and professionality of over 12,000 experts and 6,000 organisations that both play an active role in developing technical standards in any of the 219 UNE Technical Standardisation Committees.

Similarly, the award is expected to help spread the multi-sectoral, collaborative approach embodied by UNE, as well as boost the partnership model as an effective guarantee in responding to the needs of Spanish companies and public administrations.

The annual meeting of the chairpersons and secretaries of UNE's CTNs, which was held online, was attended by the Chairman and Managing Director of UNE, Carlos Esteban and Javier García, respectively, among others.
