The Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, and the Spanish Federation of Recovery and Recycling (FER) will hold the Webinar "UNE-FER: a new standard on classification for the reuse and recycling of textiles."
This event will present the new UNE Standard 40700 on Specifications for handling and classification for the reuse and recycling of used textiles, which was published at the end of 2023. This standard has been developed within the UNE Circular Economy Committee for Textile Products and the Textile Chain (CTN-UNE 40/GT 11), which is the result of the group's coordinated work that began in mid 2022.
This standard focuses on defining procedures for the collection, storage and classification of used textiles, following best practices and complying with current legal requirements. This will promote adequate preparation for subsequent reuse or recycling, ensuring the quality of second-hand textiles and, if necessary, feeding appropriately into the recycling process for textiles not suitable for reuse, in line with the waste hierarchy principle.
This standard is aimed at textile industry professionals, including textile producers, importers and retailers, as well as organisations involved in the sorting and recycling of post-consumer textile waste, along with other public and private stakeholders.
In this Webinar, both entities analysed the content of the standard and the advantages of having a standardised procedure for the handling and classification of used textiles. They will also discuss the legislative developments that will affect the textile reuse and recycling chain.
The event was attended by UNE's Director of Standardisation Programmes and Stakeholders, Paloma García; UNE's Head of Textiles, Esther Bermejo; General Director of FER, Alicia Franco; and the Head of the Regulatory and Sustainability Area of FER, Isabel M. Nogales.
